Amazing story of strength and compassion during the German occupation of France during WWII. Two sisters, Vivian Mauriac and Isabelle Rossignol, seem to think they have nothing in common until the tragedies of the war threatens to separate the families. When Vivian’s husband Antoine is sent to fight the war, Isabelle leaves Paris to help her sister and niece living in the French countryside. The fear, anger and betrayal felt by families experiencing this tragedy is almost palpable. The determination, loyalty and commitment for a cause are examined throughout the novel. Very powerful and moving story.
