This mystery novel alternates between the present and the past with differing narrators’ POV. Alex Carmichael is walking home from the pub in September 2017 to find his home engulfed in fire. He immediately fears the safety of his wife Natalie if 6 months and his young 5 year old daughter Jade. His first wife Heather died 9 years ago of cancer so he could not bear another loss. They end up staying at the Sea Breeze Hotel while an investigation into possible arson is being conducted. Natalie’s odd behavior after the fire raises concern and suspicion for Alex who returns to the burnt remains of his home in search for clues that Natalie might be hiding.
Natalie is a woman with a past she is trying to keep hidden. She fears that Alex thinks she is having an affair. Natalie is cynical with difficultly trusting anyone. She has lied to her husband about her background and family history. She manages to get herself out of the burning fire leaving Jade behind to be rescued by the first responders.
Jade survives and provides a disturbing account of events that seem to contradict Natalie’s version. The past that Natalie has been trying to hide is slowly leaked to Alex who questions the integrity of the woman he married. As Alex begins to uncover Natalie’s past he becomes alarmed and concerned about the safety of his family as his wife is not who she claims to be.
