In this latest installment of the Ellery Hathaway series, we find Ellery living in Boston following the events of the prior book. FBI Special Agent Reed Markham is visiting from VA with his 7 year old daughter, Tula. Since his divorce he has had planned visitations with her due to the unpredictability of his work. The traumatic events which brought Ellery and Reed together were unexpected and complicated. Tulsa’s mother, Sarit, agrees to her spending time with her father in Boston.

Life is never boring for Ellery who survived a kidnapping in her youth only to be rescued by Agent Markham. This seems to cloud the background of the relationships she has as an adult. She feels forever scarred and struggles with trusting and asking for help even from Reed. They seem to be progressing slowly and enjoy the time they spend together which almost always turns into a professional case to solve.

As Ellery spends time with Reed and Tula in the park, a disturbing situation occurs when a frantic nanny begins looking for a 12 year old girl under her care. Margery Brimwood is worried when Chloe Lockhart’s cell phone is discovered in a nearby trash can. The girl’s mother, Teresa, a surgeon at Mass General Hospital is notified as well as her father, Martin, works for Fidelity. Consequently, Captain James Conroy assigns Ellery and her partner to investigate the disappearance of the missing girl. Sarit is not happy with Tula being in Boston with Reed when she learns about the case being investigated. She knows Reed can’t resist wanting to help even though he’s on vacation.

Needless to say, the case become complex with unexpected suspects. There are always secrets and lies which alter the path of the investigation at every turn. They soon realize the situation involves more than just a missing a teen but a history of unusual events. The twists and suspense leave you wanting more just as you think the story is going to wrap up.
