In book 2 of the Devlin and Falco series, the story again begins with active scene with a 14 year old girl who snuck out of her house realizing she is in danger when she sees duct tape and a knife in the car. Then the story goes back 5 days to explain what led up to this dangerous situation. Detective Kerri Devlin and her partner Detective Luke Falco just wrapped up a case when this new case lands on their desk. Kerri is a divorced mother with shared custody of her 13 year old daughter, Victoria (a budding detective in her own right) with her ex-husband, Nicholas Jackman, lives in NYC and shares custody of their 13 year old daughter Victoria "Tori" in Birmingham.

At Leo's Tobacconist, two people were found dead by Tara McGill, an employee at the store. They soon discover they are the bodies of Leonard "Leo" Kurtz, 60, the owner of the store and Asher Walsh, the new Deputy District Attorney recently hired from Boston. They were both apparently shot in the back of their heads. Similar to the first novel, Kerri receives a call from Joslin Farrington, assistant to head of school at Brighton Academy where her daughter attends. The school goes into lockdown when Brendal Myers, a known school bully, is found after falling down stairs. Suspicions arise as an argument was heard prior to the accident and Alice Cortez, a 14 year old new student, claims she witnessed the event and that Brendal was pushed down the stairs. Unfortunately, the other girls present during the contentious exchange was Tori, her best friend, Sarah Tally and Alice Cortez. The claims of what happened become more complicated when it's discovered that Alice moved from Mexico for her protection from the cartel after her parents were killed.

Once again Devlin and Falco are at full speed to discover why a wealthy attorney from Boston comes back to Birmingham and how he ended up dead in a tobacco shop. They have many obstacles and stories to unravel to determine what happened and of course there is far more than meets the eye. It isn't surprising that they find themselves once again questioning connections that the local leaders may have with the Mexican cartel.
