The long awaited installment in the Outlander series. The author never fails the reader with the continuing saga of Claire and Jamie. There are all the usual characters plus children who provide humor in their innocent manners. The banter amongst the characters is always amusing especially when coming from the curmudgeons amongst them.

“John Quincy Myers’s had, during his short stay with us, opined that mountain-dwellers were so lacking in opportunities for entertainment that they would travel twenty miles to watch paint dry.”

The characters remain strong and resilient despite all obstacles. Brianna, Roger and kids make their way back to Fraser’s Ridge to once again have to rebuild the from yet another fire. Roger works on making peace with preacher Cunningham regarding the plans for the multi-use building given the religious differences.

William is still grieving after Jane’s death and discovering that Lord John is not his biological father. He wants to renounce his title and leave the military once he learns that Jamie is his father. There’s a search for Ben’s widow Amaranthus as the meeting house is finally completed. All this happens just in time for another war of the Loyalists against the Rebels.
