I admit that I was eager to read Judy Blume's newest novel, In the Unlikely Event, with high expectations. Although the book started slow, it was a challenge to continue because of the numerous narrators. Once the story began to unfold I was interested in learning how a series of tragedies devastated and restored the residents of Elizabeth, NJ. This is a work of fiction but based on real life events that the author witnessed back in her youth in the early 1950's. With this aspect of the novel I became invested in the lives of the fictional characters who all shared different perspectives of their lives amidst the traumatic events that seemed to plague their city. The story raised my awareness of real life events with which I was unfamiliar. I believe the author did a great job with putting together a fictional work with which she could express her experiences during this this very real life tragedy. Don't read it because it was written by Judy Blume with the "usual" expectations as this is unlike any of her previous novels.
